He calls it a "disgrace" and a "historic tragedy."=20 =20 Shalom, who served as Foreign Minister under former = Prime Minister Ariel Sharon for nearly three years until early this = year, said that the proposal under consideration by the Security Council = "mortgages the country's future" and would be a "weeping for = generations."=20 Lebanon, too, has objections, which may cause another = delay in the Council vote. Lebanon feels that the Shab'a Farms area, = which it still demands from Israel, is not significantly mentioned, nor = does it like the fact that the international peacekeeping force would be = empowered to open fire. Lebanon also insists that Israel withdraw = entirely from south Lebanese territory before any ceasefire is carried = out. Israel initially objected to the ceasefire proposal = for its lack of a clause requiring Hizbullah to disarm prior to a = ceasefire. United, American and Continental Airlines were = targeted in the planned attack. British authorities discovered the plan and arrested = 21 Islamic terrorists in London who were involved in the 9/11-style = plot. The attacks could have caused deaths in the range of those killed = by terror group Al-Qaeda on the World Trade Center and Pentagon nearly = five years ago. Reid said the plot was to be a major event, with = operatives planning to "bring down a number of aircraft through = mid-flight explosion, causing a considerable loss of life." Israeli officials immediately canceled all flights on = the Tel Aviv-London route, as did many other international airlines, in = the face of the security threat. Passengers were advised to postpone their trips unless = they were "essential" and to allow for extra time at the airport due to = stringent security checks. Shteinitz took issue = with the=20 fact that the new proposal would replace Resolution = 1559 of=20 two years ago, which calls for the Lebanese Army to = take over=20 southern Lebanon from Hizbullah:
"The fact that = Israel is=20 willing to significantly erode 1559, and even give = Hizbullah a=20 territorial achievement in the form of half of = Israel's Mt.=20 Hermon (Shab'a) will be understood as a clear victory = for=20 Hizbullah. This will invite a difficult war of rockets = and=20 commandos from Syria in the near future."

"If = this is=20 an existential war, as [Prime Minister Ehud] Olmert = said, then=20 the results of it are dangerous to Israel's = existence,"=20 Shteinitz concluded.

On the other hand, the = left-wing=20 peace forces are pleading with the government to = accept the=20 ceasefire proposal. Meretz MK Zahava Gal'on said, "It = is in=20 Israel's interest to accept this plan and to thus end = the=20 warfare. Israel must take advantage of the agreement = being=20 formed to call for the inclusion of Syria in the = negotiations,=20 and to thus turn it into an entity with which we can = reach a=20 diplomatic agreement."

A diplomatic agreement = with=20 Syria, almost by definition, would entail ceding the = Golan=20 Heights to that country.

Reid said the plot was to be a major = event, with=20 operatives planning to =93bring down a number of = aircraft=20 through mid-flight explosion, causing a considerable = loss of=20 life.=94

Israeli officials immediately canceled = all=20 flights on the Tel Aviv=96London route, as did many = other=20 international airlines, in the face of the security=20 threat.

Passengers were advised to postpone = their trips=20 unless they were "essential" and to allow for extra = time at=20 the airport due to stringent security checks. Carry-on = luggage=20 was banned, with the exception of personal items such = as=20 prescription medications, money, keys, glasses and = baby=20 equipment. Severe delays were reported at many United = Kingdom=20 airports.

The United States and Britain both = raised=20 their security threat status to =93severe red = alert.=94 The U.S.=20 government also raised the general alert for all = flights=20 entering and leaving the country.

=93We believe = that=20 these arrests have significantly disrupted the threat, = but we=20 cannot be sure that the threat has been entirely = eliminated or=20 the plot completely thwarted,=94 said U.S. Homeland = Security=20 Secretary Michael Chertoff.

Project "Safra VeSayfa" - = literally,=20 book and sword, or study and warfare - was formed for = the=20 express purpose of linking individual yeshiva students = with=20 specific IDF soldiers. The student "adopts" the = soldier by=20 studying Torah in his name and praying for his safety. =

Rabbi Simcha HaCohen Kook, the Chief Rabbi of=20 Rechovot, as well as the Bostoner Rebbe, Rabbi Levi = Yitzchok=20 Horowitz of Har Nof, Jerusalem, have seconded the call = for=20 such partnerships.

Rabbi Kook contacted the = National=20 Council of Young Israel on this matter, explaining the = seriousness and gravity of the situation. He noted the = Medrashic teaching that in Moses' war against the = Midianites,=20 Moses drafted 1,000 pairs from each tribe. Of each = pair, one=20 fought in the war - and one prayed specifically for = him. The=20 Torah later teaches that the Israelites did not suffer = any=20 losses.

"By connecting the soldier to Torah = study and=20 prayer," says Maayan Ohr of Tekoa, founder of Safra = VeSayfa,=20 "the yeshiva student lends strength to the soldier on = the=20 battlefield, who then transforms this force into = defending and=20 saving our homeland." In addition, she says, "We hope = to=20 increase the sense of mutual responsibility, build a = deeper=20 connection and encourage a spirit of cooperation = within our=20 people. Unifying their strengths will bring redemption = to the=20 world at large."
