The Threat from Tehran (Part 1)
Spiegel Online 2005/10/31
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad shocked the
world when he called for Israel to be "wiped off the map."
World reaction was prompt. But Iran insists. Just how much of a threat
does the Iranian leadership pose to Israel and the world? ...
The Threat from Tehran (Part 2)
Spiegel Online 2005/10/31
...What could Iran's president be up to? Is he trying to go
along with the underlying prejudices of his fellow Iranians and
detract from the fact that he has thus far been unable to keep most of
his social promises? Doesn't it concern him that he is burning
bridges, both in Europe and with the Middle Eastern states of Egypt
and Jordan, both put off by his anti-Israeli invective?
Ahmadinejad is apparently so convinced of his strength that he
believes that he must no longer take anyone or anything into
consideration when it comes to his international policies. ...the
president has placed himself at the head of a new "Control Center for
Nuclear Issues," which is managed by his friends, the Revolutionary
Guards. This enables Ahmadinejad to direct all nuclear developments
himself. With intelligence official Farhad Rahbar, who manages the
government's budget, as its deputy director, the organization has
unlimited financial resources. ...The organization's objective,
according to an intelligence document, is to "finally move things
along."

Queen Rania are working so hard to realize,” he said. ...

the Al Aksa Brigades has vowed to continue the armed struggle
against Israel until it liberates “Judea, Samaria, Jerusalem and the
Galilee." The declaration was made in response to an interview
given by IDF Chief-of-Staff, Lt.Gen. Dan Halutz, to a French
newspaper. Halutz told the paper that the IDF was no longer targeting
members of that terror group because it had joined up with the PA’s
armed forces and was no longer involved in attacks against Israel.
Calling the Galilee, “occupied territory,” a spokesman for the
Brigades said the organization would continue the armed struggle to
liberate it.

... King Abdullah II affirmed
Jordan's readiness to put all its capabilities and
facilities at the service of the Palestinian National
Authority to enable it to spread its control over the Gaza Strip and
manage the affairs of the Gaza Strip and the lands that Israel
will withdraw from. During talks with President of the
Palestinian National Authority Mahmoud Abad in Amman on Sunday,
the King said that Jordan will continue its
contacts and efforts on the regional and international levels to rally
support for the PNA, and ensure the continuation
of the peace process between the Palestinians and Israelis.
"Establishment of permanent peace is linked to
the implementation of commitments signed between the two sides,"
he said, affirming that the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza should be
followed by other withdrawals in the West Bank
in accordance with the road map peace plan.

that the mention of Saudi Arabia indicates that the true objectives
were not related exclusively to WMD." ...

Is the Caliphate Threat a Real One?
ChronWatch 2005/10/15
Your
dismissal of President Bush’s ascertation that our adversaries intend
to create a “radical Islamic empire that spans from Spain to
Indonesia” is not surprising. Whether you approve of President
Bush’s handling of the present conflict in Iraq or not, that statement
is a matter of fact. No sane person would want to see the religious
wars that tore Europe to pieces in the 16th and 17th centuries
reenacted today but this is precisely what is happening in Western
Europe, in the Russian Federation, in Indonesia, in China in Thailand,
in the Philippines, in Nigeria, in the Sudan and other points. Our
enemies, and we are their enemies, have time and time again stated in
clear and precise terms that this is a holy war and they mean to win
it. ...

What hope for the ‘axis of moderates’?
Daily Times 2005/10/15
... King Abdullah II’s visit to Asia wraps up the cast of the
so-called “axis of moderate Islam” — countries like Pakistan, Turkey,
Malaysia and Indonesia. Jordan’s belated entry into the line-up is not
entirely unexpected, considering that oil-poor Jordan — unlike its
other Arab neighbours — is largely dependent on foreign aid and
Western tourism. King Abdullah II’s rise to the global stage has been
aided and abetted by his country’s pro-American leanings and the role
that Jordan has played in helping the US broker its peace deal in the
Middle-East. ...
But what is likely to happen in the course of Abdullah II’s Asian road
show is nothing more than the generation and reproduction of the
consensus among Muslim elites, all of them beholden to Washington in
one way or another.

How to constitute a civil war
Asia Times Online

Another key article disappeared from the final (ie, today's) draft. It
used to be Article 16, according to which:
1) It is forbidden for Iraq to be used as a base or corridor for
foreign troops.
2) It is forbidden to have foreign military bases in Iraq.
3) The National Assembly can, when necessary, and with a majority of
two thirds of its members, allow what is mentioned in 1 and 2 of this
article.
The blatant contradiction speaks for itself. In the final draft,
there's no reference to the crucial issue of occupation troops or
occupation military bases - which raises the question: is Iraq set up
to be under permanent US military occupation? ...
Better yet for Iraq, why
not have an Arab country set up military operation inside Iraq?
AMMAN, May 20 (Xinhuanet) -- Jordanian King
Abdullah II said on Friday that any political and economic
reform in the
Mideast must come from within and not be imposed from outside,
alluding to US call for liberalization in the Arab world.
The above
changes, and the King's statement, would make it ripe for Jordan
to setup in IRAQ instead of the US. After all, they are
'brotherly countries', a term that has been floated a
lot lately. From there, it's only a short walk down the street
to the control of Iraq.

... Abdullah said Vision 2010,
the reform road map hammered out last month by Arab leaders meeting in
Jordan for the World Economic Forum, has set specific democracy goals
for the region in key areas that can be monitored. But each state
must move at its own pace, which won't be dictated by the West, he
said, citing his own obstacles. "One challenge is resistance from
those who fear uncertainty and change. To thwart the process, they've
. . . tried to label reform as coming from the outside," he said. "The
second challenge, a skeptical public. . . . Doubters question if it
will really happen." The king took only a handful of questions from
the audience, asserting in his responses that while President Bush's
democratization efforts in Iraq inspired regional reforms, those
reforms must be led from within and not by America.

Sukkot in Jerusalem, Holy Temple Style *****
Arutz Sheva - Israel 2005/10/14
Five families have already signed up to
join the initiative, and plan to build their sukkot - holiday
huts - on a hillside overlooking the Temple Mount. Jerusalem
archaeologist Tzachi Zweig says that this is how it used to be done:
"We know that there is a Biblical commandment to
visit Jerusalem on the three Festivals, but on the Sukkot holiday, it
is more than just a visit. Shavuot (Pentecost) is only one day,
and the commandment on Passover is also only for one day - but
the commandment on Sukkot is to 'rejoice before
G-d for seven days'. We are commanded on Sukkot to live in temporary
huts, or booths, and it's clear that with the masses of people who
came, not all of their hundreds of thousands of booths could fit
inside the city. Many huts were built outside the city,
overlooking the Holy Temple, and there are many sources indicating
this... It's logical that Mt. Scopus and the Mt. of Olives would be
chosen for this purpose." The site chosen
for the renewal of this practice
is the Emek Tzurim National Park, on the slopes of Mt. Scopus, beneath
Yeshivat Beit Orot and Hebrew University. "This is the location where
we have been running an ongoing archaeological analysis of dirt and
rubble from the Temple Mount," ... ... Some people said that
it's too hard for them to come, or the wife is pregnant, or whatever -
but I reminded them that in the times of the Temple, there were no
such excuses; everyone came. We want to accustom
people to the traditional - and future
- way of keeping the holiday."
