Jordan to Israel: Stop Watching Temple Mount

Israel Today 2013/12/22Worship

The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan wants Israel to take its “hungry eyes” off the Temple Mount.

Speaking to his country’s state-run Petra news agency, Jordanian Information Minister Mohammad Momani said his government, which still officially oversees religious control of the Temple Mount, finds it unacceptable that Israel maintains security cameras at the holy site.

“Jordan rejects Israel’s installation of surveillance cameras,” said Momani, adding that his government also “does not accept that Israel has set up a police station inside the compound. It is a flagrant military violation of the freedom of worshippers as well as an interference in the affairs of the Jordanian Islamic waqf [Islamic endowment].”

Momani spoke of the security cameras and police station as though they were an effort to “impose a new status quo in Jerusalem,” despite the fact that both security measures have been in place for decades.

He also for some reason found it necessary to imply that Israel’s security cameras were put in place, at least in part, in order to play “Peeping Tom” on Muslim women.

Jordan mulling ‘diplomatic and legal’ measures against Israel

The Times Of Israel 2013/5/16

King Abdullah II of JordanSenate speaker Taher Al-Masri accuses Israel of striving to replace Al-Aqsa Mosque with Jewish temple ... the speaker of Jordan’s Senate, Taher Al-Masry, complained to independent Jordanian daily Al-Ghad on Thursday that the Arab and Islamic response to “Israel’s premeditated aggression” against the Temple Mount was insufficient to repel “the goals of this aggression.” “The plan of Israel and the Jewish religious institutions to destroy the Al-Aqsa mosque and build the temple in its place is well-known,” Masry told Al-Ghad. “Their plan in this regard is long-term, in preparation for that day. The recent aggression is a preliminary step in implementing that plan.” Al-Masry added that Israel was also trying to undermine a recent agreement signed between Jordan and the Palestinian Authority, granting Jordan patronage over the Christian and Islamic holy sites in Jerusalem. ... ...(... the rest of the story >>)

King: Two-state solution is key to solving Palestinian-Israeli conflict

Jordan News Agency 2012/11/29King Abdullah II of Jordan

His Majesty King Abdullah II said that the two-state solution which enjoys international consensus is the basis for ending the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and achieving comprehensive peace in the Middle East. ...The two-state solution, he said should lead to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital that fulfills aspirations of the Palestinian people.

His Majesty said in his letter ...that the recent Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip was a dangerous threat to the security and stability of the Middle East and the future of its peoples. "This highlights the need for concerted international and regional efforts to maintain the truce between the Palestinians and Israelis and help the Palestinians to overcome the hard living conditions in Gaza, which Israeli aggression exacerbated," he added. Jordan to Use ‘Iron Fist’ Against Fuel Rioters, General Says

Bloomberg 2012/11/15

Jordan will “strike with an iron fist” rioters who use illegal means to express their anger over recent fuel-subsidy cuts, according to General Hussein Majali, director of the Public Security Department. At least 17 civilians and 54 policemen have been injured, seven of them critically, in riots that followed the government’s Nov. 13 decision to cut subsidies on cooking gas and vehicle fuels. A Jordanian protester was killed as he joined an armed mob storming a police station in the northern city of Irbid, state-run Petra news agency reported earlier. Majali said 158 protesters have been arrested nationwide, including two Syrians. Three banks in the northwest province of Balqa were robbed and burned, with 75,000 dinars ($106,000) stolen from one of them, he said. ...The Muslim Brotherhood, which makes up the bulk of the opposition, has called a protest rally tomorrow. Hammam Saeed, the brotherhood chief, urged King Abdullah II to intervene and restore subsidies, saying Jordanians cannot shoulder the increased burden, according to a statement on the group’s website. It is impossible for the government to reverse the measure, Ensour told Al Arabiya Television last night. It is designed to reduce an estimated 3.5 billion-dinar budget gap. A similar government subsidy-cut plan two months ago was suspended by King Abdullah after public protests. ...(... the rest of the story >>)

Jordan is not about to collapse

Mideast Foreign Policy 2012/11/14Jordanian Police

...Certainly, this week's widespread and fairly aggressive protests over fuel-price hikes are worrisome, and not a good sign for Jordan, or the regime. But, to callously equate life to sci-fi TV: all of this has happened before, and all of this will very likely happen again. Seen from within, Jordan seems extremely unlikely to fall, explode, crumble, or collapse. It is not Somalia, or Yemen: it is a middle-income country with substantial state legitimacy, large bureaucratic institutions, and a strong military apparatus. Such countries do not crumble like sand castles when a wave hits. Negative development is possible, but it takes time - -and usually a lot of waves. Nor is it Iraq, Syria, or Yemen, where the state has spent years establishing massive, coercive violence as a social norm. Jordan is unique, and actually has a lot going for it. ...(... the rest of the story >>)

King urges closer pan-Muslim solidarity

Petra Jordan News Agency 2012/8/14

King Abdullah II

...The King told a Pan-Muslim summit in Mecca that there is a pressing need to crystallize a strategic and unified vision to protect the nation's interests through institutionalizing Muslim work and harnessing all capabilities for this end. King Abdullah added that what is going in Syria clearly indicates signs of a sectarian civil war, and this requires an immediate political solution to the crisis to spare the blood of the Syrian people, achieve their aspirations and preserves the unity of Syria. He told the summit, which brought together 57 Muslim leaders and representatives, that Jordan has received more than 140,000 Syrian refugees since the outbreak of the crisis despite the Kingdom's economic hardships. The continuation of the crisis will add further strains and burdens on Jordan, the King said, urging Arab and Muslim states and the international community to help the Kingdom grabble with this burden. Speaking on the Palestinian cause, the King said it remains the core issue in the Middle East, warning that the region will not enjoy stability if no fair and comprehensive solution is found to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. He stressed that any peace settlement must be based on the two-state solution which entails the establishment of an independent, sovereign and viable Palestinian state on pre-1967 borders. ...(... the rest of the story >>)

King values call for Islamic summit

Petra Jordan News Agency 2012/8/13

King Abdullah II

...Convening the summit in Mecca during the last ten days of the holy month of Ramadan, will have a huge impact on efforts to unite the Muslim nation. "It is from Mecca that the message of Islam spread initially and now from it a new start begins to unify the nation," he said. His Majesty lauded the strong brotherly relations between Saudi Arabia and Jordan in times of regional and international challenges and dangers, stressing that "the security of the Kingdom, Gulf Arab states and Jordan is one". "We are proud of this unique relationship," the King said. This relationship, he added, serves as a model of Arab relations based on partnership, integration and genuine brotherhood. Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries have increased their economic assistance and investments in Jordan, which expressed the common fate of Arab peoples. As for the situation in Syria, His Majesty said "I have repeatedly expressed concern over of the continued deteriorating situation in Syria, and today we have to work immediately and earnestly to find a political solution to the deepening crisis in Syria". His Majesty added "It must be remembered that we in Jordan, in fact are the most to be affected by what is happening in Syria at the economic and security levels, where the number of refugees who have fled the violence in their country is nearly150,000". "Therefore, our fundamentals are that any solution in Syria must be based on the importance of maintaining the unity of the Syrian people, land, civil and regional security. Hence, we call on to stand by the Syrian people and intensify relief efforts and other humanitarian initiatives". As for the latest developments in the Islamic world, especially the future of the Palestinian issue, the King stressed that Jordan's position is consistent and firm in this regard, considering the Palestinian conflict as the core issue of instability in the Middle East. His Majesty stressed that the only way to end the tension and instability afflicting the region is to achieve a just, comprehensive and lasting solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict based on a two-state solution which guarantees the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders and Jerusalem as its capital ...(... the rest of the story >>)

Jordan's king: "Clock is ticking" in Syria

CBS Evening News 2012/8/5

Hundreds of Syrian refugees every day are fleeing across the border into Jordan. That's putting pressure on Jordan, which is calling for international aid.

"CBS This Morning" co-host Charlie Rose sat down with Jordan's King Abdullah II in Amman for an extended interview.

ROSE: You believe that...this is not going to be easy for Assad to go, because he is part of the Alawite minority? And that therefore there may be a plan B?

KING ABDULLAH: If I was putting myself in his shoes. Again, having seen the images of what happened to Qaddafi, I mean that must be something in the back of his mind. Where would I want to go if that was an option? If he does go, by whatever means, I don't see that the system around him is capable of changing. The clock is ticking on a political transition and if we don't find ourselves a way out by the end of the year, then you are going to see a spike in sectarian violence and I think its going to be a full-out civil war and I think calamity for years to come. ...(... the rest of the story >>)

The thing to always remember is that the "little horn" character of the 'end times' will be a 'good guy' type person until the fallen angel (evil spirit) is loosed again from the bottomless pit. It is then that the little horn character is 'possessed' by that fallen angel and then becomes the physical anti-Christ.

Revelation 9:1) And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. 2) And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. 3) And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. 4) And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads. 5) And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man. 6) And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them. 7) And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men. 8) And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions. 9) And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle. 10) And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months. 11) And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon. 12) One woe is past; and, behold, there come two woes more hereafter.

What the following verse says basically is that, if one does not already know Jesus as their savior, they can be taken captive 'at his will' (the devil's), not theirs. I call that being posessed, and that means no matter who it is that doesn't have the spirit of Jesus in them already. Also, I believe even Christians can be 'snared' by the devil or his fallen angel followers and slip up and fall, thereby being a bad testimony, but can never again be possessed by evil spirits.

2 Timothy 2:24) And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, 25) In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; 26) And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

Top EU official hails Jordan's reform efforts

Petra - Jordan News Agency 2012/2/21

Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh on Tuesday met with High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Baroness Catherine Ashton, and discussed arrangements for the Jordanian-EU Work Team's meeting .... The two sides stressed the importance of... the reform process led by His Majesty King Abdullah II. Judeh expressed appreciation for the EU's support to Jordan in economic, political and social areas. He stressed the importance of the European initiative to form a working Jordanian-EU group and said it reflects the EU support and appreciation for Jordan's reform efforts. ...She said that the meeting will cement relations and serve as a strong incentive to ensure effective coordination by the European Union and its Member States.

Revelation 13:3 And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.

I believe that the one 'wounded unto death' is none other than the spiritual beast that posessed Alexander the Great during his conquest for the Greecian empire. That beast has been held in the bottomless pit, as it were 'wounded unto death', until he is once again released on the earth to posess whomever he wills.

2 Timothy 2:24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, 25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; 26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

I also believe the current king of Jordan, King Abdullah II, is positioned to be the 'man of peace' who is also in perfect alignment to be posessed by the once again to be released spiritual beast from the bottomless pit, thereby giving the spiritual illusion that the 'deadly wound has been healed'. These scriptures must be taken in their spiritual and scriptural context. The EU is now 'wondering after the beast' of sorts, that is, in my humble opinion. In the end, the whole world whose names are not written in the Lamb's book of life, will be on board with his plan.

Revelation 13:8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

Jordan: One Of The Most Militarized Nations On Earth

The Black Iris 2012/2/6

The headline came as no shock. Jordan is the fifth most militarized nation in the world according to the 2010 BICC Global Military Index. Only Israel, Singapore, Syria and Russia are ahead of the Kingdom. ... Jordan is of course not alone in this, as most countries have, at one point or another, experienced such an environment of infallibility when it comes to the armed forces, especially during times of war (e.g. US during the initial Iraq invasion). However, regardless of this canonization, it is a topic that begs to be discussed, especially given the massive impact of the security apparatus, and specifically the army. Access to information would be very useful here, given the fact that a country of this size, with few natural resources, high levels of poverty and unemployment, is spending so much on the military – the question of ‘why?’ stands to be asked. ...

Daniel 11:38 But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces: and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.

Daniel 8:24 And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people.

Israeli-PA talks already have a winner – Jordan’s Abdullah

Jerusalem Post 2012/1/3

Nearly every international leader who comes to Jerusalem offers to host Israeli- Palestinian negotiations. French President Nicolas Sarkozy would die for the opportunity, as would Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Greece, Russia and many other countries have indicated their interest as well. To host Mideast “peace talks” is a feather in any country’s hat – it gives the country visibility, status, honor, prestige... that the meeting is taking place in Amman is a diplomatic coup for Jordanian King Abdullah II. And it is not a coup that just fell into his lap. No, Abdullah sought it out. This was made clear in a press release put out by the Jordanian foreign minister on Sunday, saying that the meeting came about as a result of intensive efforts by Abdullah, including through meetings in Ramallah in November with Abbas, and just a few days later with President Shimon Peres in Amman. Jordan is keen on hosting this meeting for a number of reasons. First, because there is still wide consensus on the Palestinian issue in the Arab world, even in an Arab world going through tumultuous change. In the past, meetings such as these often took place in Sharm e-Sheikh, under the auspices of now deposed Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak. Because of Egypt’s position in the region, and its peace treaty with Israel, Cairo was often the “go-to” address on Palestinian-Israeli issues. Since Mubarak’s fall, however, a void was created, one Abdullah is more than happy to fill.

By doing so Abdullah gains credit in Washington and in European capitals, credit that can’t hurt at a time of far-reaching regional changes. Practically taking steps to help the Palestinian cause also places Abdullah on a high moral pedestal in the Arab world, casting him in the role as leader who not only talks, but also acts, to help the Palestinians. It gives him legitimacy as a leader, both in the region and – to a certain degree – among his own people. Secondly, while so many in the world – the US, EU, Russia and UN – give lip service to the goal of reaching an Israeli- Palestinian agreement by 2012, few really have any illusion that it will happen. Rather, the focus now is less on conflict resolution, and more on conflict management. ...

Bridge to Temple Mount reopened amid safety concerns

JTA 2011/12/14

JERUSALEM - The Mughrabi Bridge, which allows pedestrians to walk to the Temple Mount, was reopened 48 hours after it was closed due to safety concerns. ... The Jerusalem city engineer last week threatened to order the immediate closure of the bridge, calling it a fire hazard that is in danger of collapsing. If the bridge does catch fire, it could quickly spread to the Temple Mount, the municipality has warned. Knesset members Uri Ariel and Ariel Eldad of the National Union Party entered the Temple Mount Wednesday through the newly reopened bridge, calling for the bridge to be rebuilt in order to allow non-Muslims to visit the site. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's inner Cabinet decided to delay razing the bridge and to renovate instead. "The government's helplessness in dealing with this hazardous and dilapidated nuisance at the heart of the Western Wall and entrance to Temple Mount is regrettable," the municipality said in a statement following the decision. The statement called on the government to build a "permanent and safe walkway in place of the old one." ... Israel and Jordan have been involved in talks to replace the temporary wooden bridge, which was erected in 2004 to replace a damaged stone walkway. Jordan has called on Israel to refrain from destroying the bridge, saying it will change the character of the holy site. ... (... the rest of the story >>)

Assad would be the last of the 3 to fall, as he is the last head of Arab states to oppose peace with Israel at the Sharm, according to "The Edge Of The End Of Time". Those 3 were Iraq (Hussein), Libya (Qaddafi), and Syria (Assad). If they were the 3 needed to be uprooted before the "Little Horn King", then there is only one head now to fall.

Becoming a Cobra Attack Pilot, he served the Royal Jordanian Air force. At Georgetown University he received a Masters degree before resuming a military career. Abdullah II was promoted to Major General in 1998; and attended defense courses in Monterey California at the Naval Post Graduate School. He is a qualified frogman, a free fall parachutist, a motorcyclist, and a race car driver. The King married a Kuwaiti born Palestinian with a degree from the American University in Cairo. Queen Rania worked for Citibank and then Apple, in Amman. A stunningly beautiful woman with expensive tastes and designer clothes; she is a regular in London society pages. They have four children. “Our Last Best Chance: The pursuit of peace in a time of peril,” his memoir, focuses on the Middle Eastern Peace Process, and his journey to the throne. The back cover is signed by President Bill Clinton, General Tommy Frank, and Warren Buffet. To integrate with the world economy, King Abdullah II joined the World Trade Organization, signed free trade agreements with the United States, and the EU, and forged ties with countries from Asia to Latin America. ... For Jordan, peace negotiations between Israel and Palestinian Authority must include a refugee “Right of Return”; which includes children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren of the 1948 refugees. Refugee host countries do not grant citizenship. Generations of Palestinian families living in a country are not citizens. An alternative Palestinian homeland has been suggested. As it might be Jordan, The King emphatically states that an alternative homeland cannot be part of the negotiations. ... On Monday Israeli President Shimon Peres and the King met at the Palace in Amman to discuss ways to overcome obstacles in the peace process; discussions will continue. Peres also emphasized that Prime Minister Netanyahu wants to strengthen the good strategic ties between their countries. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta spoke at the Brookings Institute about Obama’s Middle Eastern vision. Panetta spoke about Islamist advances as a positive force; and told Israel to “get back to the damn negotiating table”, and chided her for being isolated from security partners. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton criticized Israeli buses for segregation of male and female religious Hareidi passengers; comparing this to Rosa Parks; a black woman who sat in the white section of a bus before the Equal Rights became the law. She asserted that Prime Minister Netanyahu should apologize to Turkey for the incident aboard the Gaza flotilla, evidently unaware that Israeli soldiers were attacked by knives and clubs and fired in self defense. In a Washington Post interview King Abdullah II said “Nobody can depend on America anymore.” After protests in January, the King replaced the cabinet and took concrete steps to launch genuine political and economic reforms. This subdued the Muslim Brotherhood, but there are still groups against the King. Middle Eastern Kingdoms are nervous. Perhaps world class destiny will be thrust upon this soldier King. King Abdullah does not seek international domination; but joins in a quest for solutions to government thrashings by extreme Islamists. (... the rest of the story >>)

Iran moves on from "Destroy Israel!" to "Destroy all the Jews!"

DEBKAfile Exclusive Report 2011/12/3

Amid international and Israeli controversy over whether or not to attack Iran's nuclear program, the rulers of the Islamic Republic have just "upgraded" their strategic objective of wiping Israel off the map and extended it for the first time to the more ambitious one of annihilating the Jews worldwide. They are using the age-old weapon of anti-Semitism to promote their new goal.

Two weeks ago, as their nuclear bomb moved menacingly up the pipeline, the ayatollahs in Tehran and Qom unleashed a virulent campaign of anti-Semitic propaganda in their sermons. A new book and a film were released for wide distribution on orders from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. They draw heavily on the infamous Elders of Zion fiction to accuse the Jews and their rabbis of conspiring to corrupt and rule the world. ... (... the rest of the story >>)

Arab League decisions are historic

The National 2011/11/15

Arab League provides a cover for foreign intervention in Iraq and Libya; now it's Syria's turn

The decision of the Arab foreign ministers on Saturday to suspend Syria's membership from the Arab League was "too hasty" and flings the doors wide open for a foreign military intervention in Syria in the name of protecting the Syrian people, commented Abdelbari Atwan, the editor of the London-based Al Quds Al Arabi newspaper, in a front-page column yesterday. "Over the past 20 years, the role of the Arab League has come down to providing an Arab cover for such foreign interventions," the editor said. "It started with Iraq [in 1990] (Let me add a few questions here and preface them with a statement. King Abdullah II of Jordan came to power 'officially' in 1999. Is King Abdullah II of Jordan 'the little horn'? Click here to see his family tree. Does Saddam Hussein's reign which was finally toppled in 2003 make Saddam #1 of the other horns falling before 'the little horn'?), then Libya (Was Mohamar Quadafi's the # 2 regime head that was toppled (fellen) before 'the little horn'?) and now it is Syria's turn (Will Bassar Assad's regime be the #3 head to topple (fall) before 'the little horn? "Nabil Al Arabi, the secretary general of the Arab League, said the organisation is in the process of preparing a mechanism to protect the Syrian people, but he did not elaborate on the nature of that mechanism," the editor added. Whatever the nature of that mechanism, it will involve foreign intervention. ... "And now it is facing the internationalisation of the Syrian crisis," the editor said. ... King Abdullah: “Netanyahu Seeks The Collapse of The Kingdom”

IMEMC & Agencies Report post 2011/10/27

Media sources reported that King Abdullah of Jordan stated that Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, is seeking the collapse of the Hashemite Kingdom by transforming it into an alternative country for the Palestinians. ...“It is clear that this government wants to cause the collapse of the peace process in the region”, King Abdullah added, “We believe that Netanyahu and his government are trying to push Jordan into becoming an alternative homeland for the Palestinian people”. ... King Abdullah further stated that "it seems clear that Israel is systematically acting to weaken the Palestinian Authority of Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank, in order to force its collapse", adding that this would be the first step before the whole peace process in the region collapses, allowing Israel to implement its agenda of transforming Jordan into Palestine and voiding the two-state solution. Jordan's King Abdullah: Syria's Assad must go

CBS News - World 2011/10/26

(AP) BEIRUT, Lebanon - Jordan's King Abdullah said Tuesday that Syrian President Bashar Assad should step down, making him the first Arab ruler to issue such a call over the regime's deadly crackdown on an 8-month-old uprising. The surprising statement comes as Arabs close ranks against Damascus. On Saturday, the Arab League voted to suspend Syria over attacks on protesters that the U.N. estimates have killed 3,500 people since mid-March. "If Bashar (Assad) has the interest of his country, he would step down, but he would also create an ability to reach out and start a new phase of Syrian political life," Abdullah told the BBC in an interview. ...

Star Trek Theme Park Will Beam Trekkies To Jordan

If ever a contest were held to determine the world’s coolest Trekkie, Jordan’s King Abdullah II wouldwin hands down. The Red Sea Astrarium project, scheduled to open in 2014, will consist of 17 entertainment developments and four hotels, according to The National. While the project will be funded by U.S. and Middle Eastern investors, thechief Jordanian investor is the King Abdullah II Fund for Development, which the powerful Trekkie established in 2001 to stimulate Jordan’s economy and boost its tourism rating. US Warns Jordan's king: Arab Revolt is on your doorstep

Debka 2011/7/24

Jordan's King Abdullah II was warned in Washington this week that he had better start introducing political reforms without delay because a revolt against his throne was knocking at his door from neighboring Syria, debkafile's Washington sources report. The king was handed intelligence updates at the State Department, Pentagon and National Security Council, informing him that the threat to destabilize the kingdom did not emanate from a deliberate plot by the Assad regime or the Syrian opposition. It came from the potential spillover of the tumult rocking Syria and two sources in particular:. One: Many Syrian opposition factions had tribal and familial connections in Jordan from which they have been drawing much of their funding and arms. The Jordanian branches of these tribes are asking themselves if an uprising can be organized against Bashar Assad in Syria, why not against the Jordanian king? ...Two: The Muslim Brotherhood is on the ascendant in the Arab world after partially hijacking the revolts in Syria and Egypt. The Brotherhood has worldwide Islamic religious and political pretensions. The Syrian chapter senses it is on the brink of success, thanks partly to assistance from the Jordanian branch. So, they say, why not help our Jordanian brothers just as they helped us? The US scenario for Jordan if it plays out would affect Israeli security in vital areas: The Netanyahu government would have to decide whether to step in to save the Hashemite throne and if so, whether to conduct its intervention overtly or covertly. Israel must get down to preparations for the seepage of a potential uprising in Jordan across the border to the Palestinians on the West Bank and Israeli Arab communities. For weeks, the IDF and Israel's security services have been drilling scenarios for mass disorders to erupt in September when the Palestinians plan to seek UN recognition of their statehood. Have they taken into account that the disorders could flare up on both sides of the border? In Washington, Abdullah was advised to move fast with the following steps to pre-empt the flare-up of rebellion in his kingdom: 1. He must not wait for the demonstrations and bloody riots to erupt and force him to disperse them with live bullets, but introduce a series of political reforms before the clamor rises from the street. 2. He must lead the kingdom's transition to a democratically elected multi-party system of government – not the façade which exists today, but a government appointed by parliament instead of the monarch. This would require Abdullah to cede many of his prerogatives. 3. Voting constituencies would have to be redrawn. At present, they are designed geographically to keep down the numbers of Muslim Brotherhood members and Palestinians gaining seats in parliament. The constituency plan proposed by Washington would give the Palestinians more representation in the legislature and other Jordanian political institutions. 4. Obama administration officials advised the king to lose no time in accepting the Gulf Cooperation Council-GCC's invitation to join the organization. Although Jordan has accepted the offer in principle, membership has been delayed by dickering over conditions. ... DEBKAfile's sources report that King Abdullah replied to the advice he received in Washington with two comments: Political reform would have to be implemented slowly and with the utmost caution else the royal family would lose its authority to the opposition. Secondly, if the Obama administration wants more Palestinian representation in elected Jordanian institutions, it must, at least for appearances' sake, push forward negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. The king said it was unacceptable for the Hashemite royal family to make concessions to the Palestinians in Jordan without Israel also making concessions to the Palestinians in the West Bank. DEBKAfile's sources say that Washington officials who spoke with King Abdullah were worried by the slowness of his responses and actions: ...

Our Last Best Chance: The Pursuit of Peace In A Time of Peril

Scholars & Rogues 2011/7/11

It seems oddly prophetic that Jordan’s King Abdullah II published his first book when he did. Our Last Best Chance, a memoir pressing the need for peace in his region of the world .... From Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf to Bill Clinton’s My Life, books authored by state leaders usually get published while they are not in the position of power for which they’re known. This trend makes Abdullah’s book all the more intriguing—-Our Last Best Chance was written and published just over 10 years into his reign. ....Abdullah’s commitment to securing peace for his people and civilians everywhere permeates his text. At times, this passion results in non-thrilling, almost sedative circumlocution and repetition of narrative. But his narrative accurately conveys how much he wants to achieve peace among his neighbors, an admirable trait for someone in such a position of influence throughout the region. .... The Israel-Palestine problem is no doubt complex and divisive; even Abdullah isn’t immune from making a politically colorless commentary. He puts forth his position on the two-state solution to Palestinian independence so frequently that sometimes it’s tempting to visualize a blue-faced Congressman rambling upon a wooden crate on a street corner in days of yore. But at the same time, it’s difficult to become irritated with Abdullah. He is a wise and respectable leader who consistently acts in the interests of his people. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has had a vast impact on Muslims around the world seeking the protection of Jerusalem. He remains one of the very few leaders in the world who will avoid war as a solution to problems in favor of face-to-face diplomacy and peaceful resolutions. He also has a clearer, more moderate view on terrorism and al-Qaida than many higher-ups on Capitol Hill do. He is aware that the present day may be the last window of opportunity Arab nations have to secure peace and security for the future. All of these things make King Abdullah an authoritative voice on the Middle East and its place in this world—a place that for some Americans is still shrouded in mystery and shrouds of smoke from 9/11. It would be wise for anyone to heed his words. .... (... the rest of the story >>)

President to Renew Muslim Outreach

The Wall Street Journal 2011/5/11

WASHINGTON—President Barack Obama is preparing a fresh outreach to the Muslim world in coming days, senior U.S. officials say, one that will ask those in the Middle East and beyond to reject Islamic militancy in the wake of Osama bin Laden's death and embrace a new era of relations with the U.S..

Mr. Obama is preparing to deliver that message in a wide-ranging speech, perhaps as early as next week, these officials say. The president intends to argue that bin Laden's death, paired with popular uprisings sweeping North Africa and the Middle East, signal that the time has come to an end when al Qaeda could claim to speak for Muslim aspirations. "It's an interesting coincidence of timing—that he is killed at the same time that you have a model emerging in the region of change that is completely the opposite of bin Laden's model," Ben Rhodes, deputy national security adviser at the White House, said in an interview. Since January, popular uprisings have overthrown the longtime dictators of Tunisia and Egypt. They have shaken rulers in Libya, Bahrain, Syria, Yemen and Jordan, marking the greatest wave of political change the world has seen since the fall of the Berlin Wall. But the push for democracy appears to have stalled in some countries. The street protests against Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi have morphed into a civil war, with North Atlantic Treaty Organization backing the rebels. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Bahrain's ruling Khalifa family have both met demonstrations with violence. Bin Laden's death gives Mr. Obama a chance to underscore the belief among many administration officials that the terror leader's relevance had already begun to diminish during the so-called Arab Spring. Mr. Obama, who has made outreach to the Muslim world a cornerstone of his presidency, plans to describe the Islamic world as at a crossroads, said U.S. officials, making the case that bin Laden represented a failed approach of the past while populist movements brewing in the Middle East and North Africa represent the future. ...Mr. Obama is also scheduled to meet Jordan's King Abdullah II in Washington next week. The Arab monarch has been at the forefront of Mideast leaders calling for the U.S. to impose its own peace plan on the Israelis and Palestinians. Jordan's population is 60% Palestinian, and the king has faced his own popular protests in recent months. ... (... the rest of the story >>)

Authorities confident old Christian manuscript smuggled to Israel

The Jordan Times 2011/4/4

AMMAN - The Jordanian government on Sunday reasserted its claims to 2,000-year-old manuscripts it believes may represent the greatest discovery on the eastern banks of the River Jordan.

Director General of Department of Antiquities (DoA) Ziad Saad announced yesterday efforts to reclaim the so-called Jordan codices, 70 metal books bound by lead which Jordanian authorities believe date back to the first century AD and may be the earliest Christian texts ever discovered.

The books billed by Jordanian experts as “more historic than the Dead Sea scrolls” are in the possession of Hassan Saeed, an Israeli bedouin who claims that the texts were passed down from his grandfather.

“We have every indication that these texts were excavated from Jordan illegally in recent years and smuggled across the border,” Saad said at a press conference yesterday.

With scientific evidence in hand, Saad said authorities are working at every diplomatic and legal level in order to return the books from across the river and into Jordan.

According to Saad, the texts and their Jordanian origin were brought to light by David Elkington, a British religious author who was approached by Saeed in 2009 to examine the books’ authenticity.

Saeed travelled to London with two sample books for the scribe’s viewing. When he first laid eyes on the lead codices, Elkington said he knew the texts were no ordinary find.

“When I saw it, I knew immediately I knew it in my heart that these were real and it was the perfect discovery,” Elkington told The Jordan Times over the phone from London.

Most striking were a series of symbols and codes etched across the cover of the texts indicating that the books’ authors were most likely some of the earliest Christians.

A seven-branch menorah, which Jews were forbidden to depict at the time due to its location near the holiest of holies, and the imprint of a star hovering above a palm tree are among several markers which Elkington claims signifies that the texts may refer to Jesus Christ.

“These rarely seen forms of the eight-pointed star tells you this is the star of the Messiah.”

Elkington then sent samples to laboratories from England to Geneva in order to date the texts. Analyses of crystallised Roman lead and leather material found embedded in the lead leaves pinpointed the books’ origin in the early first century AD, Saad said.

Despite the wealth of information revealed by linguistic and metallurgical analyses, Elkington said his team had no indication of the texts origin - let alone that the books may be smuggled goods.

It was only after analysts requested the name of the location of the discovery in order to contrast the Roman lead with naturally found impurities did Saeed reveal codices’ origin: a cave in northern Jordan.

“All this time we thought they were discovered in Israel.”

Elkington then travelled to Jordan, where the DoA and the British scribe worked to locate the cave where the books were uncovered and gather further evidence to confirm the dating.

Authorities are currently awaiting further dust and pollen analyses before going forward with their case, but have chosen to go public after Saeed threatened to sell the codices, Saad said.

“It is our fear that this historic discovery may never see the light of day,” Saad said.

Jordanian authorities remain confident with scientific claims bolstered by historical records indicating that the East Bank of the River Jordan served as a refuge for waves of Christians fleeing persecution in the first century AD.

“This gives us very strong evidence of the important role Jordan played in the early Christianity era,” Saad said.

With authorities set to take their claims to the international level, experts believe the books can be returned to Jordan without resorting to diplomatic or legal channels.

“I really hope that we can reach a situation where Hassan is seen to freely deliver these books back to Jordan and set a good example to others who have artefacts that they too would like to have in the hands of a museum and not just a private collector,” Elkington said.

Jordanian authorities voiced hope that no matter how the saga ends, the books will find a final home in a museum on the eastern bank of the River Jordan, near the very site where its authors sought refuge some two millennia ago.

“These manuscripts are a part of Jordan’s heritage and global heritage, and we hope to share it soon with the rest of the world,” Saad said. ... (... the rest of the story >>)
