Can Hamas Be Tamed?
Foreign Affairs March/April
2006
Summary: Optimists argue that Hamas' participation in
mainstream Palestinian politics will spur the group to moderate its
radical goals and terrorist tactics. But history shows that political
participation co-opts militants only under very specific conditions --
and almost none of those exist in the Palestinian Authority today.

State's Hughes Outlines Public Diplomacy Initiatives

Washington -- Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public
Affairs Karen Hughes outlined the initiatives she has introduced
during her seven-month tenure, describing them as an effort to lay a
"long-term foundation for waging peace."

Iran's regional influence has never been stronger. And all,

surprising, then, that Washington now sees Iran as the main challenge
to US foreign policy in the Middle East. The irony is that the US, in
invading Iraq, cleared the stage for Iran's foreign policy-makers:
Washington claimed the invasion was in response to Iraq's possession
of weapons of mass destruction (WMD). Now it may well have to face
real, and not virtual, WMDs. Iran has hijacked what Washington
trumpeted as its victory in Iraq and in doing so it was lent every
possible help by policy-makers in the Pentagon and the White House.

Rethinking sovereignty
The Jordan Times 2006/3/28
...The goal should be to redefine sovereignty for the era of
globalisation, to find a balance between a world of fully sovereign
states and an international system of either world government or
anarchy. The basic idea of sovereignty, which still provides a useful
constraint on violence between states, needs to be preserved. But the
concept needs to be adapted to a world in which the main challenges to
order come from what global forces do to states and what governments
do to their citizens rather than from what states do to one another.
Sounds a lot like 'global

Olmert Substitutes Ambition for Sharon's `Charisma,' Authority
Bloomberg.com 2006/3/27
Ehud Olmert, the leading candidate for prime
minister in tomorrow's Israeli elections, has tried not to appear too
eager since he took control of the government after Ariel Sharon's
stroke in January. ...``He doesn't have the charisma of Sharon, or his

he's highly intelligent, he's shrewd, he's very experienced in

response to the victory of Hamas, classified by the U.S. and the
European Union as a terrorist organization, was to stop the monthly
flow of about $50 million in taxes and customs fees that Israel
collects on its behalf. The World Bank warned the move could trigger a

The Arab Summit Is Distinguished by the Prominence of Its Absentees
DEBKAfile Special Report
2006/3/27
The two-day 18th Arab League Summit opening in Khartoum
Tuesday, March 28, looks like being a semi-washout. The rulers who
announced their non-attendance were Hosni Mubarak of Egypt, King
Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi, Tunisia’s
Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali and Oman’s Sultan Qaboos.
...Arab summit resolutions must be unanimous to take effect. No Arab
ruler relishes the thought that firebrands like Hamas’s Khalid Meshaal,
Mussa Abu Marzuk and Mahmoud a-Zahar, the incoming Palestinian foreign
minister, would have held the power to veto Khartoum’s resolutions.
Unlike the more thorny issues, endorsement of the
internationally-sponsored road map peace plan, is plain sailing for
the Arab summit, and so is rejection of Ehud Olmert’s plan to
determine Israeli’s borders unilaterally while ostracizing a Hamas-led
Palestinian government. For lack of leverage on all the
prime issues confronting the Arab world, the ill-attended Arab summit
can do little but stand by and watch while others make the running.

Arabs poised for Palestinian isolation after Israel election
Khaleej Times Online 2006/3/25
Arab leaders, along

party to win Israel’s election next week and to maintain a policy of
isolating the Palestinians. ...King
Abdullah II of Jordan, the only Arab country along with Egypt to have

critical. “We are waiting to learn whether Hamas will

France’s Le Monde daily this week. “Optimism will be the
word if Hamas commits itself in the political sphere and a moderate
Israeli government that wants to make peace is formed.”

An "Arab" President Instead Of The "Syrian" One
Dar Al-Harat 2006/3/25
The Lebanese parties opposing the "international, Western, and
American tutelage" must prove that they will accept the Arab
initiatives as an alternative, in the way they would handle
the awaited Arab action. The latter is meant to break the deadlock in
Lebanon and defuse the crisis between
Lebanon and Syria, starting in the first place by ousting
President Emile Lahoud. After having long
criticized the March 14 Forces for rejecting the Arab action, the
pro-Syrian Lebanese forces must now adapt themselves to this action
for two reasons:

God’s Threshing Floor
Israel Today 2006/3/23
For
thousands of years, the most disputed threshing floor in the world has
been Jerusalem’s Temple Mount on Mount Moriah, known as Har HaBayit in
Hebrew (Mountain of the House [of the Lord]) and al-Haram-al-Sharif in
Arabic (The Noble Sanctuary).
...Three
places in the Holy Land were not conquered in war by the Jewish
people, but were purchased according to the law of the Land. And these
are the very places the Moslems want to take from the Jews:
Abraham paid 400 shekels of silver for the Machpela Cave (now
the Tomb of the Patriarchs) in Hebron to bury his wife Sarah. (Genesis
23:16)
The Israelites bought a place in Shechem (today’s Nablus) for
100 coins to bury Joseph’s bones. (Genesis 33:19)
David bought the threshing floor on Mount Moriah for 100
shekels of silver, so the Temple could be built there.
...So
a cosmic showdown is unfolding over the Temple Mount, according to the
prophet Zechariah (chapters 12 and 14). This dispute goes far beyond
Israel and the Palestinians. Israel will face an onslaught from the
entire world, with the Moslems leading the holy war against the Jews.
The Temple Mount embodies the struggle between Isaac and Ishmael
Note: This
article is interesting in that it brings out facts about Temple Mount
and other areas of dispute between Jews and Muslims. However,
their statement about the third temple is incorrect in their
assumption that the temple mount must be cleared of the mosques, or as
they are referred to as 'pagan edifices', prior to the third temple
being built. Matthew and Daniel speak of the same incident on
temple mount (holy place). Daniel clearly shows that sacrifice and
oblation will be ongoing up until it is caused to cease at mid point
in the tribulation period (midst of the week), and Revelation clearly
states that the temple (assumed the third one, since only two have
existed to date) is present during that same period, but that the
outer court is given to the Gentiles during that period.
Matthew 24:15 When ye
therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel
the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him
understand:)
Daniel 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week:
and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the
oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall
make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined
shall be poured upon the desolate.
Revelation 11:2 But the court which is without the temple leave out,
and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy
city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.

Iran Focus 2006/3/2
Iran’s radical President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad declared on
Thursday in Malaysia that Islam will be the dominant power in
the “near future”, the official state news agency reported.
...The Iranian president’s vision of a world dominated by Islam in the
“near future” is bound to exacerbate concern in the West and among
moderate Muslims, who are alarmed by his strong views on the “imminent
return” of the Shiite messiah, the Mahdi.
“Ahmadinejad is on record as saying that he sees his main mission as
being that of preparing the stage for the return of the Mahdi”,
said Ali Basrawi, an Iraqi Shiite political analyst living in London.
“He belongs to a school of thought that believes the Mahdi would
return only when the world is in deep crisis. That political
philosophy, particularly if devoutly believed in, could lead to very
erratic and unpredictable decisions by the president of a country on
the verge of acquiring nuclear weapons”. ...
I speculate that
Amadinejad and King Abdullah II have a private understanding, and that
Amadinejad already recognizes King Abdullah as the Mahdi.

The Daily Star 2006/3/20
...Fifth, each of the above options, with
territorial division of the Temple Mount between Israel and the
Palestinians. ...In the fifth option, similar to the fourth,
the historic basin would "usually" be administered as a single unit,
although this would be carried out by the international body itself,
and not by the parties. Nevertheless, it is possible that relatively
small areas, primarily those holy places on which there
is no dispute, would be divided among the sides on a territorial
basis. According to this plan, which would essentially mean
internationalization of the holy basin, the international body would
retain not only supervision and oversight authorities; it would also
be responsible for administering the holy basin, and would constitute
its source of authority and control. ...

organized the major opposition movements within Syria after his

The Nazi Connection to Islamic Terror
FrontPageMag.com 2006/3/15
...Glazov: In many respects, you could say that al Qaeda, the
Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas etc. are all, on one level, branches of

Morse: Nazi money, largely looted from Jews, was used before,
during and for decades after the war to help establish and influence
these groups. Nazi war criminals emigrated to the Arab countries after
the war in an effort known as "Operation Odessa." Al-Husseini played a
role in this operation. Certainly they have embraced Nazi style
anti-Semitism and tactics.
Glazov: Nazis like al-Husseini and others in his genre have received
support from prominent westerners over their more moderate
counterparts. Why?
Morse: This is a fascinating question that I don't have the
answer to. Before and during the war, al-Husseini and his ilk were
supported by the Nazis while after the war the support came from the
Soviet Union and various groups affiliated with the international
left. Leftist groups continue to support the radical Islamiso-Fascists

...The tantrum Republicans and Democrats are throwing on center stage
is very effective at covering the activity teeming in the shadows.
Time Magazine's Daren Fonda writes that another Dubai company shows no
signs of backing off its Navy contract in the Middle East.
Britain sold Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS) to "a Dubai government
investment vehicle for $285 million." According to Fonda, ISS
"provides services to clients ranging from cruiseship operators to oil
tankers to commercial cargo vessels." ISS operates out of more than a
dozen U.S. port cities, the article states, "including Houston, Miami
and New Orleans."
In a June 2005 release, ISS announced it will provide all
logistics requirements of U.S. Navy and Coast Guard ships in ports
throughout the Middle East. The release also notes that ISS may asked
to provide services for U.S. military training exercises and
"contingency operations inland." ISS will "partner" for these services
with Halliburton's Kellogg, Brown & Root (KBR), which has been awarded
billions (and billions) of dollars in no-bid contracts for Iraq
reconstruction. KBR watchers might wonder if these "contingency
operations inland" have anything to do with its recent no-bid contract
to build a network of detainment camps in the U.S.
Also under consideration is the sale to Dubai International of
(you guessed it) yet another British company that makes precision
parts used in engines for military aircraft and tanks. The UAE
purchased London's Doncasters Group for $1.2 billion, which
operates nine factories, including military production facilities in
Connecticut and Georgia. According to Middle East Newsline,
Doncasters' clients include Boeing, General Electric, Honeywell and
Pratt and Whitney...
What should concern Congress and, as a minimum, tweak the
curiosity of the media is the UAE's ties to, and protection of, Osama
bin Laden and al Qaeda, its recognition of the Taliban as the
legitimate government of Afghanistan, its thwarting of a CIA attempt
to kill bin Laden before 9-11, its massive money-laundering network
for terrorist activity, its funding ($23 milliion) for Neil
Bush's IGNITE! learning systems company, and its furnishing two
hijackers for the 9-11 attacks. The UAE's appalling record on human
slavery should be dragged out of the shadows for all to see. In June
2005, the U.S. State Department reported that the UAE is a major
destination for women sex slaves, and it regularly imports, steals or
buys children from other countries to serve as camel jockeys to feed
the gambling frenzy of oil-rich sheiks.
Why the UAE will win
We seem to be incapable of wrapping our minds around the concept
of "order" that our increasingly totalitarianism government is
inflicting upon us. Even as we "high-five" our success at
forcing Congress to back out of the Dubai deal, we fail to notice that
the power brokers on both sides of this issue have not budged. And
they will not. ...

ACTION FOR PEACE IN PALESTINE AND ISRAEL
UN Observer 2006/3/10
Church groups on four
continents are raising their voices together for peace in Palestine
and Israel, March 12-19, 2006. "International Church
Action for Peace in Palestine and Israel" is an advocacy
initiative with broad ecumenical participation convened by the
World Council of Churches. ...The goal is to promote a just
peace together, guided by long-standing WCC and other Christian
organisations positions on an equitable, negotiated solution to the
conflict. These policies reflect the broad international and
legal consensus around a two-state solution ...
Joel 3:2 I will also gather all nations, and will bring
them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with
them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom
they have scattered among the nations, and parted my
land.
Any church or people that
advocate 'parting the land' are not on God's side, no
matter how many agree on that so called 'solution'. Israel
is God's heritage and His land according to Joel 3:2, and He
will hold ALL accountable.

speech on social and economic problems due to the Israeli Occupation
and deepened by the building Wall. He greeted them
remembering
"Christians, Jews and Muslims, are all sons and daughters of the same
God, and brothers and sisters in the same father Abraham." ...
John 8:39-47 They answered
and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them,
If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham. 40
But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which
I have heard of God: this did not Abraham. 41 Ye do the deeds
of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication;
we have one Father, even God. 42 Jesus said unto them, If God
were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came
from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. 43 Why do
ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. 44
Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will
do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth,
because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh
of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. 45 And because I
tell you the truth, ye believe me not. 46 Which of you convinceth me
of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me? 47 He
that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not,
because ye are not of God.
''China Becomes Increasingly Involved in the Middle East''
PINR 2006/3/10
Two regions have emerged as the most likely sources of great power
conflict in the 21st century. The first is the Middle East, which is
the focal point for the U.S.-led war on terrorism. The region is
important both as part of a global ideological struggle against
Islamist extremism and in the quest for oil and gas resources. The
second is Asia, as the rise of China presents competition for
both intangible and material resources on the world stage.
On the ideological front, China's model of protecting one-party
rule by improving the economic livelihood of the people and
emphasizing the principles of sovereignty, non-interference and
territorial integrity while calling for a multi-polar international
system challenges the U.S.-led international order, which
favors democracy, human rights and humanitarian intervention. ...

closed-door meeting in Vienna yesterday. That stunning statement, by
U.S. ambassador Gregory L. Schulte, not only turned heads; it changed

they have gone widely ignored in the liberal media. In his latest
confidential report to the IAEA board, on February 27, ElBaradei
detailed no fewer than eight major violations by Iran of its treaty
obligations, including the discovery by IAEA inspectors of damning
documents relating to nuclear weapons work. Some IAEA questions had
been left “unanswered” by Iran for three years. Despite
this mountain of damning evidence, however, ElBaradei was telling
reporters as late as Monday that the nuclear crisis with Iran could be
“solved” in a matter of days or a week. ...

Iran’s President: Islam to dominate world in “near future”
That political
philosophy, particularly if devoutly believed in, could lead to very
erratic and unpredictable decisions by the president of a country on
the verge of acquiring nuclear weapons”. ...
I speculate that
Amadinejad and King Abdullah II have a private understanding, and that
Amadinejad already recognizes King Abdullah as the Mahdi.

living in Israeli as well. The country is dominated by insecurity,
fear and poverty at the same time social inequalities spiral out of
control. Palestinian Christians face the same struggles
and suffer the same desperate situation as all other Palestinians but
we also face an alarming rate of migration out of Palestine. The
Christian presence in Palestine is important for the whole society and
we are concerned for the future of our community and for the
institutions that serve all Palestinians. The same
solution is required to end the suffering both in Israel and
Palestine: A just peace reached through negotiations guided by
international law. An end to the illegal Occupation is the first step
towards real peace and security for both Israel and Palestine. Peace,
Justice and Security for Palestine will bring Peace, Justice and
Security for Israel. ...

Port purchaser suspect on terror, WMD links
(a little on the lighter
side of life)
Pocono Record 2006/3/1
Editor, the Record:
George Bush is a riot. Remember when he pretended to search for WMD
under his desk? I'm sure the soldiers who died looking for those WMD
would have chuckled over that one. Then there was his unforgettable
one-liner after the drowning of New Orleans: "Brownie, you're doing a
heckuva job." Bush's sense of irony is delicious, too, like when he
tells working families they have to be more self-sufficient and then
runs up U.S. debt to foreign countries by 79 percent, to $1.81
trillion. Or when he lets pharmaceutical companies off the hook for
taxes on revenues made overseas, but won't let seniors buy cheaper
drugs in Canada.
So stop me if you're heard this one: A traveling salesman from the
United Arab Emirates walks into a bar and says, "Who can I talk to
about taking over operations at six major U.S. ports?"
The bartender points to Michael Chertoff, head of Homeland Insecurity,
who's enjoying a cold brew. Chertoff says, "Hey, wasn't the UAE a key
transfer point for illegal shipments of nuclear components to Iran,
North Korea and Libya?" The rep nods. "And didn't I see an FBI report
that money was transferred to the 9/11 hijackers through the UAE
banking system?" says Chertoff. The rep nods again. Chertoff
continues. "And didn't I read somewhere that the 9/11 Commission
called the UAE a fountain of resources for al-Qaida?"
The rep senses a trap. "Yes," he says nervously, "but we are allies in
the war on terrorism. Your President Bush said so himself."
"Well, we do have to balance security concerns with our desire to have
a robust global trading system," replies Chertoff. "Can I interest you
in a few nuclear power plants?"
This is one of those times when you have to laugh to keep from crying.

...If a new "civilian security" entity—one with, say,
malevolent intent towards this nation—assumed control over the
civilian security eyes on the piers, the written manifests and the
actual cargo holds of the ships, and the scheduling of when
longshoremen unload the cargoes that arrive in our ports will be
determined by that new management. Since the longshoremen's unions
that control the offloading of cargoes from the ships in these ports
is racked with mob influence, a new port boss with malevolent design
might find a willing conspirator in the unions if they believed the
only cargo the longshoremen were turning a blind eye to was
counterfeit Disney movies, Gucci bags, or the latest teen fad. ...As
he threatened to veto any attempt by Congress to kill the port deal,
President George W. Bush was shocked to discover that a majority of
the American people—67% at last count—logically opposed turning
control of any of our ports over to an Arab nation, or for that
matter, any foreign power—even one that our government viewed as a
close ally in the War on Terrorism. The reason is obvious to most
Americans even if it eludes the president. The Islamic entity that is
waging war against the United States are not the secular heads of the
Arab nations who are politically aligned with America and are more
interested in money than theology. Rather, our enemies within those
nations are Islamic radicals who are protected by extremist Wahabbi
clerics whom the leaders of those Arab nations fear—and fund. ...Bush
just doesn't get it—whether we are talking about sealing our porous
northern and southern borders from the infiltration of terrorists into
the United States from Mexico or Canada or talking about eliminating
foreign entities—not just the United Arab Emirates—from controlling
our ports. China—America's most dangerous enemy—controls the movement
of contraband in 12 of our ports. The United States government knows
that China is using Long Beach as a listening post to intercept the
transmission of data from defense contractors in California. What are
they listening to in New York, Baltimore (the Washington, DC metro
area), abd Norfolk? How many illegal automatic weapons are coming into
the 36 ports under the control of foreign entities? Let's
face it, America will not be secure until Americans secure all of our
borders and all of our ports of entry. We can't let our political
enemies, under the guise of political correctness, assume the role of
keeper of the keys to the gateway of America. To do so is stupid.
Since September 11, 2001, this nation can no longer afford to be
Forrest Gump. Stupid is as stupid does leads down only one path—the
path of destruction.
